Child Welfare Projects in Mongolia

Holt's main work involves the Special "Rainbow" Baby Care Unit in the Infant Sanatorium in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's capital city. Through funding for nutrition and training in child development for childcare workers, Holt has worked to provide the children with the quality care they need. The goal is not only to benefit the children directly in Holt’s care, but also to model practices for childcare staff throughout the institution. Through developing programs in Mongolia, Holt strives to improve care for homeless children throughout the region.

Special “Rainbow” Baby Care Unit Through the formation of a special baby care unit within a state-run infant and toddler orphanage, abandoned children are nursed back to health and well cared for. Children receive proper nutritional and medical care and support, and attentive caregivers provide developmental stimulation for the children.

Permanency Planning Whether it is with families in Mongolia or the United States, adoption offers the best opportunity for many homeless children to grow up in permanent, loving homes. Services are provided to enable local and intercountry adoption of Mongolian children.

Staff Training and Technical Assistance Holt is consulting with Mongolian child welfare authorities on alternative services to better enable children to be in permanent loving homes, and in the development of such services as foster care and social work capabilities. Training and technical assistance can be provided in effective childcare techniques, adoption regulations and practice, child assessment and reporting and a variety of other social work and public health areas of vital concern to children.

Foster Care

In 2004, Holt placed the first child from the Infant Sanatorium (IS) in foster care.  Holt’s partner agency the Naidvar Center worked in cooperation with IS staff to identify potential foster families and provide them with training, supervision, and support.  The introduction of foster care to the IS means that children now have the potential to experience family life before joining a forever family of their own.
